A new wave of medieval-style covers is taking over the internet by storm.
Listeners are being drawn towards a new genre of cover music called Bardcore (or Tavernwave) over YouTube and Spotify. Artists are remaking modern hit multi-genre songs with a medieval take using lutes, flutes and old school English lyrics.
The aesthetics of the Middle Age made its way into general online consumption for millennials and Gen Z via various meme pages and shows. The Bardcore trend burst online on April 20th, where a user Cornelius Link uploaded his version of Tony Igy’s electronic dance hit Astronomia on YouTube. The 27-year-old German web developer made this remix in the wake of the boom of the Coffin Dance meme.
Another user Hildegard has successfully medievalised Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance and Radiohead’s Creep; YouTuber Constantine has produced Get Lucky (Medieval Style), and Samus Ordicus has made a remix of Paint It Black.
According to Musicologist Dr. Lisa Colton nostalgia and a sense of mythological mystery has pushed this trend further, especially in this uncertain time.
