The sustainability of clothing is growing in popularity. With this, now Muslims all around the globe can wear their best thobes, kaftans, salwar kameezes and abayas that they were not able to wear during the pandemic. Those trendy, elaborately woven pieces are more viable for an increasing number of people who have reconsidered their clothing choices throughout that period.

The Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha, which commemorates the completion of the Hajj journey, begins on July 20. And, in response to a desire for environmentally-friendly Eid apparel, Muslim designers have produced eco-friendly items in the run-up to the festival. Mariah Idrissi and Halima Aden, both Muslim fashion stars, have recently supported sustainable fashion initiatives.

According to the 2020/2021 State of the Global Islamic Economy Report, the sustainability of the clothing industry has risen in favor of modest fashion events for consumers. The word “modest fashion” refers to the restrictive dress style adopted by Muslims. In 2019, for example, the most recent Modest Fashion Weekdays of Muslim-focused fashion presentations — highlighted sustainability among its main themes, with a bevy of Muslim designers producing designs created from environmentally friendly raw materials or technology.

“We are obligated to take care of the planet and to watch after it from an Islamic perspective,” Medina added. “That includes being plainly ecologically mindful and not harming the environment and, as a result, all the things that dwell on it.”

Medina debuted an Eid line of silken gowns that combined sustainability with glitz. As Eid approached, the demand for their eco-friendly fiber hijabs has soared.

During the pandemic, Lena Aljahim and Fakhrya Alshubi of Dearborn, Michigan, debuted their ecological modest dress company Fayena in November 2020, just like Medina. They sought to provide an ethical and sustainable option to unsustainable and unethical clothing, which they claimed was frequently the most available option.
