A lot of us get introduced to the latest products or services with the help of social media. While e-commerce platforms work as a catalyst for consumer purchases, social media introduces us to the latest products and services in the market. Instagram has a large community of creators and small businesses. Thus, Instagram is adding an e-commerce appeal to the pre-existing social media platform to give it a more holistic appeal to the audience.

Instagram has recently announced that it would expand access to creators who want to sell their own merchandise. For this new initiative, the company introduced new “Commerce Eligibility Requirements.” These requirements offer a set of guidelines that interested businesses must adhere to, in order to qualify for Instagram selling. The new addition to Instagram Shopping arrives in the form of a platform for creators to sell such things as crafts, artwork, merch — all done directly in-app. The creator’s account must demonstrate “trustworthiness” by having an authentic and established presence with a sufficient follower base.

Other rules include not displaying misleading pricing and availability information and having clearly stated refund and return policies. These requirements will go into effect on July 9 in all the markets where Instagram Shopping is supported. After signing up for Instagram Shopping, businesses will be notified as soon as they’re approved so they can begin tagging products.

This new initiative by Instagram is definitely business owner’s dream come true. Further, considering the gigantic number of users of the app, this technique to establish it as an E-commerce platform will give a good competition to the already existing e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon. Further, due to a large customer base of more than a billion users, Instagram could become a lucrative direct-to-consumer launchpad for influencers selling merchandise
