The clothing industry is one of the industries eyeing sustainability globally. Aiming not only sustainability but having a goal to bring systematic revolution in the process of manufacturing clothes, San Francisco-based Unspun, which joined Hong Kong’s The Mills Fabrica “tech style” incubator developed and launched jeans made from AI and 3D weaving which would not only be customizable according to a person’s needs but unique to every person’s body. The manufacturing process would produce almost zero-waste.

The company only manufactures the jeans when the order for it is placed, this ensures that excess production is not done. Unspun uses a 3D body scanner to generate virtual customer avatars using 100,000 data points. Customers then select their desired fabric, all of which are made from organic and recycled cotton, colour, and style. Unspun uses its little cut waste to create reusable packaging for their jeans which apparently can also fit a 13-inch laptop.

Unspun’s founders chose to focus on jeans, which has one of the most polluting and labor-intensive manufacturing processes. Workers who sandblast fabric to create distressed denim are saddled with chronic lung disease, while dyeing requires toxic chemicals and hundreds of liters of water per pair of jeans. They are determined to change the polluting and labor-intensive denim manufacturing process through the use of technology.

In pans to expand the accessibility of the product, It has also partnered with a body scan company called Fit3D to set up more than 1,000 infrared scanners worldwide where customers can get a 20-second body scan – allowing for customized fittings, stitching, and styling. It is also developing a 3D weaving machine that would completely eliminate fabric waste. The start-up aims to become a zero-waste operation and bring about a systemic revolution.
